Do not give aspirin to children under the age of 16. Over-the-counter painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, can help reduce the pain. Try to move the arm as little as possible. While waiting to see a doctor, stabilise the arm by using a towel as a sling - this goes under the forearm and then around the neck. If the injury is severe – for example, the bone is poking through the skin or the pain is unbearable – immediately call 999 or go straight to your nearest A&E department. Most people have returned to all their activities by about 3 months after surgery.If you think you have injured your collarbone go to your nearest minor injury unit or contact NHS 111 Wales for advice. Your doctor or physiotherapist will teach you gentle exercises to keep your shoulder moving for about 6 weeks, until you can start exercises to get your strength back.
